What is it?

A three-dimensional model is a digital representation of a physical object. It allows the object to be viewed from any angle, under any lighting conditions, including cross-sections and two-dimensional drawings.

Once in digital form it can be used in many formats for CAD, graphic design, CAM, 3D printing, and video.
